At Naturalcity furniture we customize not only the size of our bookcases but also their purpose. This whole unit was made primarily to house what is know as a Butsudan, a wooden cabinet that protects the Gohonzon, the object of devotion in Nichiren Buddhism and takes the form of a scroll inscribed with Chinese and Sanskrit characters, a mandala, of the eternal and intrinsic law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.
With room for books, related objects and space itself, we helped create a Buddhist shrine.
Made with selected reclaimed scaffold boards that are joined to give generous storage depth, rarley found in mass produced furniture.
The natural colour of this wood compliments all colours of rooms and all rooms of the house as well as our clients Butsudan.
P.S we can make Butsudans too! Contact us for details..
Our friends at the Mixology Group, experts in the art of cocktail mixology, asked us to whip a couple of training bars for their amazing new training space in Brighton almost as quick as mixing a couple of Screwdrivers!
Apart from the urge to rise to the challenge of time I wanted to try an idea I'd had of a design for some bar height kitchen island breakfast bars. Similar design as our popular selling console table too. Suffice to say, you can get yourself one or two now on our etsy shop, click here for details..
Stripping down the scaffold boards into thin strips looks good and provides stability to the structure.
Ever popular pipe clamps and fixings find their way as foot rests.
Henry P. Glass (September 24, 1911 – August 27, 2003) was an Austrian/American designer, architect, author, and inventor. One of his most popular designs today has become the Hairpin leg, designed by him in 1942.
Interestingly his design concepts across all of his work had long since highlighted an awareness of the environmental impact of the production and distribution man made objects..
Concepts: Efficiency in materials use, minimize waste in manufacturing, reduce environmental impact. Optimize shipping, portability & storage of furnishings by use of folding and collapsing design elements (Wikipedia)
There are many ready made hairpin legs available to buy on the internet today but we wanted more variation in size and shape to match our various table and desk designs as well complete control of quality. Once we had our designs we were very fortunate to be able to enlist the welding skills of Clare Grotefeld creator of the Glyndebourne silver Rose to make our designs exclusivley for naturalcity furniture.
This dining table below has extra wide hairpin legs to compliment the tables size as well as using much heavier guage steel than normally found elswhere.
They come flat packed and ready to bolt together.
Two variations on our hairpin legs. A round coffee table and a tall entry way console tables.
Here at Natural city furniture we love to combine the old with the new. Our brief was to create a modern desk space with wood that had character but was functional.
For all our customers we can produce computer generated illustrations using Vray for Sketchup, to show the final product before committing to buy. We create textures of the wood from our own photographs of the wood we use daily.
Victorian pine denotes the age of the wood. Mostly from floor joists, this wood has had plenty of time to settle and season. Originally the wood was cut from trees as old as one hundred or even 200 years old. These old trees were much denser in grain than even the best pine available today.
To keep the wood looking as natural as possible, we apply a finish of Osmo polyx.
The wood is cut and planed to size purposely exposing the oxidised nail holes, a reminder of the woods origin.
The Wandering Goose craft beer pub in Worthing was one of our most recent hangouts this December.
Nathan, the owner, asked us to completely clad behind the bar in rustic reclaimed floorboards, adding no less than 10 new beers making a total of 25 on pump!
No time to sample them all, above is the "before" shot.
Transformed! Now which beer first!?
We are pleased to say we are now working with Julie Hallhall of JHHDesigns. Working for a new letting agents in the fast developing Portland road area of Hove, Lawton and Dawe properties asked us to make all new desk spaces.
Over a coffee with Julie, we came up with a rough sketch..
A dimensional drawing and final render below for the clients approval..
Accuride push to open drawers
Final install of a total of 5 desks..
Visiting The midsussex wood recycling project looking for scaffold boards, I picked up some odd lengths of hardwood. I wanted to test out our new Hammer A3 26 planer thicknesser..
Planing them up revealed some Idigbo...
I had a design drawn up on Sketchup, something popular I hoped.
A high level of accuracy is needed. For hardwood and when cutting angles..
A top I had made up earlier, more reclaimed, it was just the job.
The finished product! Oiled, buffed and ready for sale.
Next time you get the chance, have a look around your house for any hidden spaces and funny corners. At Naturalcity furniture we are experts at building custom desks and workspaces in those very places. Alcoves are the obvious choice if you have them, but what about your hallway?
Above shows a beautifully curved desk, designed on sketchup and made from solid timber. One thing about the hallway is that you don't want to be banging in to corners every time rushing to the door to get that Amazon delivery!
With these curves you'll just go with the flow!
Here's the process..
Once we've got your approval for a design, we then make a template from the drawing out of MDF. Next, we rout out the shape from 40mm thick pine boards joined earlier.
We make these hidden floating shelf brackets...
Then the installation...
And finally we went for a quality paint finish, we wanted the desk to look part of the building. But equally we could have kept it natural.. Contact us with your ideas!
As you can see from our Design process page, we use Trimble's Sketchup to produce visuals for our customers. The ability to produce accurate scale drawings and to communicate them across the internet is an absolute game changer.
We make a drawing in the same way as we will make the actual piece, ensuring every step of the way that it will work. Alterations are easy, in fact the whole process is so quick, we are happy not to charge. With no commitment to buy, any designs we produce can always be made up for our Etsy shop. Hopefully a win win for everyone!
